Better Medical has recently welcomed Dr Joanna McLeod to its Mt Barker South Medical Centre in the Adelaide Hills. She joined Norton Summit and has extensive hospital experience from her previous GP roles at Hampstead Gardens Clinic in Adelaide’s northern suburbs and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in South Australia’s capital city.

GPs can refer patients for specialist appointments at My Home Hospital (public hospital-level services delivered in the comfort of the patient’s home) through the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN).

Referrals can be made by phone, with a nurse taking primary identifiers and demographic information from the referring doctor. The referral will then be transferred to the admitting medical officer, who will discuss the person’s clinical needs with the referring doctor before accepting or declining the referral. Referrals can also be faxed using the SALHN standard or clinic-specific templates where available. See the Referrals for Hospital Services page for additional information.

If you live in a small rural town, getting to medical centres in larger cities can be challenging. In such cases, it is essential to find a medical centre that offers walk-in clinics to visit whenever you need. It will save you time and money, as you won’t have to pay to schedule an appointment in advance.

You should also consider the location of the medical centre. It should be convenient to where you live, work, and shop. It will make you feel comfortable going to the clinic and increase your chances of staying committed to your health plan. A medical centre that is too far away can cause you to cancel your appointments, costing you more money in the long run.
